Deadpool 2 is not far away. Not far away at all. That notion still feels vaguely miraculous, given the first film's resounding critical and commercial victory after years of resolute 'Never gonna happen' status. Everything about the Deadpoolmovies still feels a bit impossible. But Deadpool 2 is close. And it has Cable. And Domino. And one of John Wick's directors. It all feels almost a bit too perfect.
But let's not worry about such things, and instead enjoy the reassurance that sometimes things can be that good. In fact, let's wallow in that warm, nourishing feeling even further, by diving deep into literally everything we know about Deadpool 2.
The last Deadpool 2 trailer – the Bob Ross themed ‘Wet on Wet’ teaser – was big on delightfully batshit, Deadpool self-awareness, low on anything to do with the actual film. The new trailer, however, strikes more of a balance. I mean it still features Deadpool acting out a major action scene between himself and Cable using action-figures in a cardboard city set – bouncing straight off a fourth-wall breaking shutdown of old Alloy Arm’s dramatic introduction – but we do then get a whole boatload of action-focused footage from, you know, the actual Deadpool 2 movie.
Or at least I assume we do. As far as we know right now, it could all be bluff footage filmed in Ryan Reynolds’ bathroom over the weekend, and the actual Deadpool 2 might be a romantic comedy about aardvarks, distributed via the medium of flick-books handed out in cinema lobbies. But assuming all of this is actually legit, here’s what we’re getting:
Cable wrecking a roomful of well-armed (possibly futuristic) SWAT team officers, literally single-handed. Deadpool smashing a guy in the face with a brick. Domino elbowing a guy in the head. Negasonic doing something with fire. Deadpool fighting guys without his costume, possibly at home. Cable jumping over a truck. Car stunt action with (yay!) Dopinder. Loads of weapon-loading, loads of shooting, a kid - played by Hunt for the Wilderpeople’s Julian Dennison - flipping the double-bird, and a whole lot of Deadpool’s ass.
And for all the upscale in action, everything still feels pleasingly personal and gritty, a la the first film. Which is great. It would feel wrong if Deadpool turned into a glossy blockbuster. We probably have John Wick co-director David Leitch to thank for the continuation of Tim Miller’s ‘small-scale spectacle’ vibe. That guy is great at making stunningly choreographed violence feel improvised and intimate.
“After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor - finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.”
I mean, look, it's Deadpool 2 - or rather "Untitled Deadpool Sequel" according to the synopsis, in a probable dig at The Avengers 4's spoiler-dodging refusal to pin down a title. Any and all of the above is technically feasible. But where does Cable fit in? What's Domino's role? Were their character reveals a smoke-and-mirrors diversion? Does Josh Brolin really play the horny hounds? Is Zazie Beetz a ninja yakuza cocktail judge? Who knows. We'll find out next June.
