Mamma Mia ! Here We Go Again Reviews

We’ve been waiting for a glimpse of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the Mamma Mia sequel, and now it’s finally here. The trailer dropped on Thursday morning after a teaser was released, saying that the movie, featuring newcomer Lily James, had wrapped. In that announcement, we got to see returning stars Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski, and Dominic Cooper palling around on the gorgeous set (missing only one person we’ve been dying to see in her island duds: Cher). In the trailer, Donna’s status in the present day isn’t exactly clear—her friends refer to her in the past tense, and Seyfried’s newly pregnant Sophie announces that she doesn’t know how “to do this by myself” and makes several mentions that imply Streep’s character’s absence. This was not taken lightly. Some fans have claimed they will start a “riot” and boycott the film if Streep’s Donna has been killed off, with the London Evening Standard quoting one such tone-setting Tweet: “Right whoever’s s*** idea it was to kill off Donna in Mamma Mia 2 needs to f******rethink the whole film and start again else 2018 needs to be cancelled altogether.” Another user Tweeted: “As much as I would have wanted a sequel, I did not sign up for less Meryl Streep. Donna Sheridan better not be dead because I don’t know what will happen to me.”

As for Cher, who has joined the cast in the role of Donna’s estranged mother (and possibly reunited with her crime-fighting partner and Silkwood costar Streep), our biggest question remains: What will she be singing? (Remember when she tantalized us with some fabulous shoes and also a single word: “FERNANDO”?) The new trailer gives us a few more hints: The film will be a prequel-sequel, picking up where we left off with Sophie, but also filling us in on the lives of Donna (played by James) and her friends in flashbacks from the 1960s.
If it’s possible, we’re even more excited to escape to the Greek isles and bask in that ABBA glow now, although we have to wait until July 2018 to see the whole thing. Check the trailer out above and see for yourself.
