It’s the most high profile exit of directors from a project in some time. Earlier this year, when Phil Lord and Chirstopher Miller were taken off the Han Solo Star Wars movie by Lucasfilm, they were replaced by Ron Howard, who has now wrapped photography on the film.

They’ve been chatting for the first time since their departure from the project at a panel promoting their animated TV show, Clone High. And the subject of Star Wars inevitably came up. The pair, it should be said, showed a lot of class.

“The experience of shooting the movie was wonderful. We had the most incredible cast and crew and collaborators. I think in terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs”, Lord said. “That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big. Sometimes people break up, and it’s really sad, and it’s really disappointing, but it happens and we learned a lot from our collaborators and we’re better filmmakers for it. We’re really proud of the work we did on the movie and we wish everybody the best”.

Miller added that “we’re super well-adjusted, obviously we’re doing great. We’re super drunk right now. As Phil said, we had such a great relationship with cast and crew, we were really rooting for them. After we took a much-needed vacation, we got back into it and now we’re writing and producing a sequel to The LEGO Movie and producing a Miles Morales animated Spider-Man”.
Ron Howard is set to be credited as the sole director on the Han Solo project now (having reportedly reshot as much as 80% of the film, with the budget soaring as a consequence). For Lord and Miller, they have a sizeable slate of projects that we very much look forward to seeing. They’ve still not directed a bad movie.

There remains speculation that the movie will slip back to December 2018 - December being the opening date for the last two Star Wars films as well as the next one - but right now, Solo is just over a year away.

star wars han solo movie

We're four months away from the release of Solo, Disney's upcoming Han Solo origin film, and things aren't exactly looking promising.
First, the movie's original directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, were unceremoniously fired and replaced with Ron Howard while the film was well into production. Then there was the film's limp title, the rumors about Alden Ehrenreich needing acting lessons, and a report that Disney is gearing up for the movie to tank. Finally, there's the complete lack of publicity—it's pretty bizarre that we don't have a trailer or an official poster or promo photos or any real information about it this close to the release date outside of Ron Howard's Instagram feed.
Finally on Tuesday, Disney released a plot synopsis for Solo, giving us our first official details about the upcoming Star Wars movie. Unfortunately, it likely won't do much to ease anyone's Solo concerns.
"Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy," the synopsis reads. "Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga's most unlikely heroes."
Since we already knew that both the Falcon and Lando would be making appearances in Solo, neither of their mentions are particularly revelatory—it was pretty easy to guess that we'd wind up seeing that fateful sabacc game in the movie. Same goes for the way Han met Chewie. Both of those iconic Star Wars moments will be fun to finally see or whatever, but they're still just moments—and nothing in the synopsis offers us anything like a compelling narrative spine that could hold these "daring escapades" and bits of fan service together.
Still, rumors and a lackluster synopsis probably aren't enough to completely give up on Solo yet, especially since Disney has a pretty solid track record with Star Wars films thus far, all things considered. Let's just wait for the trailer to drop before we completely panic. Until then, everyone can go back to arguing about The Last Jedi.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Reviews

While we sit on the verge of the first Star Wars movie that's not about somebody named Skywalker, many fans are even more curious about the film that will come after Star Wars: Episode VIII. What's going to happen when we see Han Solo played for the first time by somebody else? At this point, we know several of the pieces that will go into the as-yet-untitled Han Solo movie, but we have no idea how those parts will come together into something that is both fresh and new AND the familiar Han Solo that we know.
Here's everything that we know about Han Solo: A Star Wars Story or whatever the heck they're going to call it.

What Is The Han Solo Movie Release Date?

While Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were set as Christmas movies, the plan was for Star Wars: Episode VIII to shift the release schedule of the franchise to the summer. While Episode VIII was delayed back into Christmas, the Han Solo film is still set for a release early in the summer movie season, on May 25, 2018. This will follow the release of Avengers: Infinity War on May 4 and How to Train Your Dragon 3 on May 18. In the weeks following Han Solo's release, we'll see the Transformers film that is set to focus on Bumblebee and the all female Oceans 11 spinoff, Ocean's Eight, the following week. Disney will be back only two weeks later with The Incredibles 2 from Pixar on June 15.

What Is The Han Solo Movie Rating?

This far out we have no idea what the Han Solo movie could be rated. Traditionally, Star Wars has been a PG franchise, however, both the final episode of the prequel trilogy, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens received PG-13 ratings. The same was true of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the only previous Star Wars spinoff. This would seem to indicate that PG-13 may be where future Star Wars movies expect to be, and it's a good bet for Han Solo as well.

What Is The Han Solo Movie About?

At this point, we only have bits and pieces that imply what the movie will be about. J.J. Abrams, who is the keeper of all things Star Wars, has intimated that the movie will take place somewhere around 10 years prior to the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. This potential time period is interesting because it sits basically smack in between the end of the prequel trilogy and the beginning of the original trilogy. The Empire will exist, and as a decent force, but not nearly at the level of power that they have in Star Wars: A New Hope. While many have likely thought that the Han Solofilm will try to recapture the look and feel of the original trilogy, in the same way that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in many ways, the fact is that the Han Solo movie could look unlike anything we've seen in Star Wars before. Separate from both trilogies in equal measure.
One story point that has been rumored is that the movie would depict Han Solo winning the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian. Even if true, we can't really see the entire film being about that, so this would likely be one plot point among several. However, the news that Lando Calrissian will be a character in the film does lend some credibility to the idea.
We also know that Han Solo's mentor will be a major character in the film, so we can expect to see how Han learned the skills to become a smuggler.
A lot of Han Solo's backstory has been told through the Extended Universe of books and comics. While all the books that were written prior to Disney purchasing Lucasfilm have been deemed non-canonical, a handful of characters and events that started in that world have been repurposed by Disney, so it's possible that the story this movie will deal with is out there someplace in the canon already.
We know that Chewbacca will be a character in the new film as well. Will the movie have them be working together already when it starts, or will the movie tell us how the two came together? We would guess that something like that is possible, but we have no clear idea what direction the film is going at this point.
Based on something the writer has said (more on the next page) we'd guess that the movie will start sometime before Han Solo was a professional smuggler and will explain what events led him on the path that eventually placed him at the Mos Eisley cantina.
